- Guide Words (p.10): Anything that points to a specific word or stands out.
- Title Page (p. 1): Shows the title of the book, the name of the author, the publisher, and many times has a picture.
- Table of Context (p. 4): Shows you where specific things are in the book; such as chapters, glossary, and index.
- Index (p. 108-122): Shows you where specific information is in the book.
- Glossary (p.100-104): Gives the definition of unknown words.
- Heading/subheading (p.5): A heading is the title of a chapter or any other words that tell what the chapter will be about. A subheading tells what a specific paragraph will be about.
- Key Words (p.27): Important words in the text.
- Photographs/Illustrations (p. 16-17): Helps the reader understand something by looking at it from the inside. Gives the reader an image to support the information provided in the text.
- Captions (p.21): Tells you what is happening in the photograph or illustration.
- Diagrams (p.37): Explains what ever is in the picture is.
- Labels (p.38): Tell you what something on the picture is.
- Textbox (p. 33): Brief definition of something kind of like a caption.
- Map (NA): Shows where different places and others are.
- Special Print (p.41): important words that are usually in italics, bold, highlighted, or specially colored.
