Glossary of poetic terms
Define the following terms as they apply to poetry. Find examples in the text as your read "Love That Dog" - cite examples with quotes and page numbers.
Alliteration - A sentence or line that begins with the same letter or sound
Quote - "jumping up on me his shaggy straggly paws."(p.46)
Assonance - A resemblance of vowel sounds in a rhyme
Quote - "Blue car, blue car, shining bright in the darkness of the night: who could see you speeding by like a comet in the sky?"(p.8)
Figurative Language - Language that uses figures of speech like metaphors
Quote - "as if they were saying Me! Me! Choose Me! I'm the best one."(p.26)
Hyperbole - Purposely exaggerating a lot
Quote - "And they will shout Car!"(p.32)
Irony - Using words to mean the opposite of what they actually mean
Quote - "I tried can't do it brain empty"(p.2)
Imagery - Forming images in your mind when you read or think about something
Quote - "Making a picture with words"(p.22)
Metaphor - Compares two objects to each other without using like or as
Quote - "My brain was pop-pop-popping."(p.35)
Meter - Arranging words in a measured, or rhythmic lines and verses
Quote - "They look nice 1

Narrator - A person that tells the story
Quote - "I don't want to because boys don't write poetry."(p.1)
Onomatopoeia - A word that is what it sounds like

Personification - Giving an inanimate object human traits
Quote - "Write about a blue car that had miles to go before it slept."(p.7)
Point of View - Position from which something is observed
Quote - "I don't understand."(p.2, first person)
Rhyme - Words used in a story or song that sound the same
Quote - "blue car, blue car, shining bright in the darkness of the night"(p.8)
Rhythm - Shows how long or short the poem syllables are
Quote - "So much depends
upon
a blue car
splattered with mud
speeding down the road."(p.4)
Simile - Comparing two things
Quote - "Some tiger sounds are still in my ears like drums beat-beat-beating."(p.8)
Stanza - a group of lines forming the basic recurring metrical unit in a poem, a verse
