- Phineas dropped his tamping iron and it fell and blasted through his head
- Phineas had survived for about eleven years after his injury when most people would die almost instantly
- He survived that long because he had an open brain injury instead of a closed brain injury
- If he had had a closed brain injury he would have died much more quickly because the brain would have had no room to swell
- Around the time of Phineas Gage doctors did not yet know that bacteria causes disease
- Also during his time microscopes were thought of as entertainment for the wealthy and not tools for scientific discovery or medicine
- Microscopes were invented around about 1665
- Cells were first discovered when Robert Hooke looked at an extremely thin piece of cork under a microscope and saw boxlike things, which he called cells
- Another man named Anton van Leeuwenhoek discovered single celled microorganisms in a drop of water with his new more powerful microscope
- Fourteen days after he was injured Phineas Gage got very sick but his doctor saved him
- Only ten weeks after the incident Phineas is apparently fully recovered from his head wound
- After the accident Phineas went everywhere with his tamping iron
- He also ends up having a big scar on his forehead and a little one on his cheek
